올해 6번째 읽은 원서는 Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine입니다. 5월에 읽은 anxious people이 원서 읽기 하는데 흥미를 붙이도록 쐐기를 박은 책이라면, Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine는 앞으로 내 취미는 원서읽기가 될 거야 라고 결심하게 만들어준 책입니다. 

 

주인공  Eleanor의 캐릭터가 맘에 들어 이 책을 읽기로 선택하게 되었습니다. 늘 주인공은 특별하거나, 평범하지만 특별한 상황이나 일이 생기거나, 특별한 남자를 만나거나 무한 긍정의 캐릭터인 경우가 많아서 웬만하면 다 진부하게 느껴졌는데, Eleanor는 냉소적이고, 직설적이고, 어딘가 어두운 면이 있는 것 같은 캐릭터여서 관심을 갖게 되었습니다. 만약 이 책이 전개되는 과정 가운데 로맨스가 싹트고 했다면 무척 실망했겠지만 역시나 제 예상을 빗나갔고 책을 정말 재밌게 읽을 수 있었습니다. 한마디로 독특하면서 엉뚱한 면이 있는 Eleanor라는 캐릭터로 인해 Eleanor의 힘들었던 과거와 현재를 좀 너무 어둡게만 풀어나가지 않도록 하지 않았나 싶습니다.

 

원서 읽기를 하면 스토리가 재밌는 책이 있고, 작가의 필력에 한 문장 한 문장 간직하고 싶게 만드는 책이 있는데, 이 책은 스토리도 재밌지만 후자에 더 무게가 실리는 책이라고 생각합니다. 이 책 역시 오디오북으로 읽었는데요. 한 구절 한 구절 이 표현은 내가 가져가고 싶다는 생각을 읽는 내내 하게 되었습니다. 내레이터도 연기를 정말 잘해서 더 흥미롭게 읽었던 것 같습니다. 그리고 제가 평소에 섹시하다고 생각하는 영국 발음이어서 정말 귀가 호강하며 읽었습니다.

June's novel of the year: Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine.

A thirty-year-old woman, Eleanor, had been a finance clerk for nine years, working for a graphic design company. She managed to live on a pittance that Bob, her owner, paid her. She didn't think her peers liked to socialize with her and accidentally overheard them say that she is mental. That's how the people at work found her.

She has scars not only on the cheek made from her childhood but in the heart. One of her routines is an illusive call with her mummy on a Wednesday and another is to spend weekends drinking a vodka in horrifying, fearful loneliness.

She attended a concert, at which she had a crush on a singer, and afterward made an effort to physically ready herself for an outside chance of a private meeting with the musician by getting a Hollywood bikini wax, spending extravagantly on an outfit and boots in which she hardly able to walk with concerns about any injuries, and getting a makeover. Unfortunately, she failed to encounter him with destiny, ending up disappointing her with him poorly performing onstage.

Raymond, in the IT department, repaired her computer, and they got to know each other. One day, on the way out  the office, Eleanor came across him and as they were headed in the same direction and waiting at a pedestrian crossing, they saw an elderly man falling hard on the opposite side of the road and saved him to hospital. This encounter led her to be invited to parties, gatherings and to socialize with others, to be able to have feelings of warmth from people in Sammy's family and Raymon's, to being accepted, to have a friendship with Raymond, and to counseling sessions where she eventually summoned the courage to face her past when she underwent physical emotional abuse, and to forgive herself, a victim of child abuse, letting her free from all the consequences, feeling guilty.
